In Nan's Rams Seamus McGeoghegan and Paddy Clarke (CWC A) bowed out to (TJ's Tigers) players Davy Hanna and Adrian Annett. McGeoghegan has played very little for CWC but Clarke has only lost 1 game since he joined well over a month into the season. Hanna and Annett have been steady but their stunning 2-0 defeat of the CWC duo was a huge upset.
Over on their own table Pairs champions Pat Brady and Harvey Lavelle (CWC A) had no such problems as they edged out tricky opponents Mervyn Kernaghan and Brendy Devlin (Orchard Bar) 2-0.
Cathal Phelan and Shane Phelan maybe enjoying their high flying success with (CWC A) so far this season but they were ousted 2-1 by struggling (McGuigan's A) pair Gerard McGuigan and Brendan Healy in TJ's.
A surprise result in Bellinis saw dissapointing Division 1 pair Paul Taylor and Johnny McMurray (TJ's B) shock Premier Division players Martin O'Callaghan and Joseph McTaggart (Whitecross) 2-0.
McGuigan's was the venue for (TJ's Tigers) sharpshooter's Jason Lennon and Niall O'Hare who were taking on lower Division opposition in Jimmy O'Hare and Mark Magure (Nan's Rams). Yet again the lower Division couple prevailed and the Tigers lose out to the Rams.
Margaret Ireland and Aidan Griffin (Indo B) might be rock bottom of Division 1 but they put their poor league campaign to one side to beat ex-premier Division players Chris Cunningham and Calim McParland (CWC B) 2-1 out in Carrickcruppen.
Kieran Cunningham and Barry Kelland (CWC B) ply their trade in Division 2 and while they may meet opponents next season in Division 1 it was still a massive upset when they beat struggling Terry McNally and Brian Campbell (McGuigan's A). In fairness McNally and Campbell are 2 of McGuigan's better players which makes this 2-1 defeat even for the CWC B pair.
Another McGuigan's pairing travelled up Monaghan Street to face tricky Division 1 (Dan's). No world beaters Seamus Tumilty and Gerard Hughes ousted the fancied (McGuigan's A) duo
Paul McAreavey and Damian Flanagan 2-1.
The shrewd David Cromie and the talented PJ McDaniel (Orchard Bar) were hot favourites heading into Bellinis but Pat McClenaghan and Stephen McSherry (Nan's Rams) yet again proved lower Division players can't be taken for granted when the Rams pair edged through to round 2 on a decider 2-1.
In one of games of the night two Premier Division Pairs clashed in Armagh/Down. (TJ's A) hotshots Laurence McAlinden and Jack Courtney are among the favourites for the title and the took on the tactical Tommy Lavelle and free potting Aaron O'Callaghan (Carrickcruppen). This one went to a decider but the inform TJ's A pair nicked it 2-1.
Another good quality match went the distance when Mark Pentony and Barney Preece (Nans Rams) ousted higher league opponents in Richie Taylor and Nicky Irwin (TJ's Tigers) 2-1.
Last years beaten finalists Eugene McDermott and Stevie Noade (TJ's A) were made to fight all the way by the super reliable pair Killian McDonald and Anthony Murphy (Millvale). The TJ's double act progessed 2-1.
Kieran Hanna and Ciaran Hanna jnr (Carrickcruppen) had a hard fought battle on there hands and they edged a decider against 2 excellent lower Division players Oran Keenan and Willie Andrews (Armagh/Down) 2-1.
Micky Cunningham and Cathal McCoy had a good run last year and sailed safely through 2-0.
Manny Byrne and Tristan Byrne (TJ's A) are among the favourites for the title this year so lets see what happens and remember this is where you heard it Newry Pool League Blog.
