Sense has prevailed and praise the Lord the Newry pool league chiefs have sorted out their differences. There will officially only be 1 pool league this year after peace talks in CWC provided a happy platform for all concerned to move on in harmony.
Kieran Hanna must get a special mention and he will be nominated for the Noble Peace Prize. The Irish Peace process was handier sorted than than this mess so hats off to everyone who brokered the deal. Rumour has it the lads are now being sent to North Korea to relieve the oppresive dictator Kim Jong-Un of his nuclear weapons by peaceful means.
Now that everyone is all loved up again, we could get down to some real business.
During this meeting it was decided to change a few rules to move the league forward and improve the game as a spectacle as well as improving the standard of the players. A rule brought in is one that has been much debated in the past.
The rule word for word on the wepf website is as follows:
1 On all shots, the player must:-
a Cause the cueballs initial contact with a ball to be with a. ball "on". AND THEN
b. pot a ball "on" OR; cause the cueball or any object ball to contact a cushion.
2 Failure to play a legal shot is a standard foul (2 shots to opponent).
The exception to that rule (paraphrasing) is when you are 'totally' snookered. You call 'Total' and you just have to hit your ball and do not need to pot or hit a cushion after contact with your ball.
This rule in essence stops players rolling in behind a ball to get an 'easy' snooker.
This rule is a disaster for players like Pat Brady, Cathal Phelan and Cathal McCoy. Make no bones about it this rule will help those who don't wish to watch 20mins of puke pool.
Another rule that got a tweaking Is a rule close to Jack Courtney's heart. When the breaker pots a ball off the break He/She ONLY has to nominate if they are switching suits.
If a yellow and red is potted you MUST nominate.
If you pot 1 ball and wish to stay on that colour to do NOT need to nominate.
If you pot red and want to switch to yellow you MUST nominate.
I don't think it can be any clearer than that.
On to the Fantasy Pool league.
People aren't 100% sure how this is going to work but let's try and clear things up.
It's works the same as the fantasy football.
You pick your team and gather your points.
When the list of players comes out in under a month's time you will have a budget of £50m to pick 8 players.
Points only count in League games ONLY.
You will only be able to pick 2 players from any 1 Premier Division team.
If a player wins his league game he will gain 2 points. A bonus point will be given for a break finish and 1 bonus point if their team wins.
So if you have Manny Byrne in your team and he break finishes and his side wins he will get 4pts.
If you pick Dodi Mc Conville in your team and in the unlikely event he wins and his team only draws then that's 2pts.
The aim is for you to pick 8 players inside your budget and pick the players you think will get you the most points. In an ideal world your team would consist of team like: Manny Byrne, Laurence McAlinden, Pat Brady, Harvey Lavelle, Kieran McMahon, Cathal Phelan, Michael Feenan and Declan McConville.
Of course those players will burst the bank so you will have to dip into teams like Bears and Carrickcruppen were the players are less likely to pick up regular points and thus will be a lot cheaper.
Keep an eye out for the player lists in about 3 weeks and see what we think your worth and pick a team to win.
The winner will be the person with the most points after the last league BEFORE Christmas.
Unfortunately we are only taking the 1st 10 names to confirm their entry.
This should be good craic so don't miss out.
