After an embarrassing turn out for the AGM a new committee was formed but even during the farcical AGM cracks were starting to appear.
This new committee refused to allow former chairman Kevin Magee to be Co-opted on so it was decided for the betterment of the local pool scene that Micky Cunningham, Kevin Magee & Jim McQuillan would take up the posts they held last year. The AGM is now classed as null and void due to the fact there was not enough present for majority vote.
Now Kevin Magee isn't everybody's cup of tea. In fact he's more like marmite. A cup of marmite laced with mustard would be fairly accurate. One thing that can't be denied is his passion & enthusiasm for the Newry Pool league. He maybe a terrible player but his and Micky Cunninghams organisational skills could only be beneficial for any new pool committee.
This is a new start for the Newry & District Pool League. After listening to the players present at the AGM it was decided that massive changes were needed. Here are thee proposals put forward by Micky Cunningham, Kevin Magee & Jim McQuillan:
The Premier Division play Blackball rules while Division 1 & 2 remain Newry league rules.
Division 1 & 2 would have their own Singles competition plus their own separate cup competition to go along with their regular Divisional Cups.
All Division 1&2 players would be free to play in the Cunningham Cup & Vegas Cup as well as the Overall individuals which would be played Blackball rules.
☆☆(Brief summary of the Blackball rules will be at the bottom of this page)☆☆
These are just proposals. If teams want different rules or to stay as it is then feel free to comment or contact us by phone or text. But it does seem that the overwhelming majority of players in the Premier Division wish to move on & play governing body rules of either Blackball Rules or World rules.
There will be £300 prize money guaranteed for league winners with major sponsorship sorted.
Kevin Magee will be handing out the team sheets this Thursday evening in Bellinis 4th of August so get down there, register your team & enjoy an exciting new era for the Newry & District Pool League.
And the best news of all is that the blog has been given another years contract now that the website is back up & running.
World Rules & Blackball Rules are played across the globe. They are the 2 rule sets that are universally played as far away as Malta & South Africa to Australia & United Arab Emirates.
World Rules is the bigger organisation ran by the WEFP. After a major split a few years ago a lot of the top pros left the World Rules to play Blackball pool & despite some pros going back to the World Rules the Blackball pool (WPA ran) has gone from strength to strength. Incidentally the Blackball World Pool Championships will be held in Ireland in October of this year.
World Rules is said to be more tactical & more of a thinking game than Blackball.
☆BLACKBALL RULES ☆
The big difference for us Newry Pool league players is that in Blackball Rules 2 shots don't carry following a foul.
A ball must hit a cushion after every shot (unless a ball is pocketed or you are getting out of a 'total' snooker)
An exciting rule is the 'skill shot' were you can pot your opponents ball so long as you pot your own ball in the same shot. This can be very useful when an opponent hangs a ball in front of your ball to block a pocket.
It must be said 2 shots DO carry following a foul in World Rules.
A ball must hit a cushion after each shot played (same rule as Blackball rule).
A huge rule which will affect us is you have NO free table following a foul. So if an opponent has a pocket covered you will NOT be able to pot it to clear your path.
You CAN do as many deliberate fouls as you like without forfeiting the match. This could be useful if someone has a pocket covered & clearing the pocket seems to be the best option. Your opponent will have 2 shots though when they visit the table.
It must be said as the blogger I am completely neutral to what rules we play. Players DO fear it will make TJ's A stronger Team but they have cleared up all 4 team trophies in the last 2 years so can changing the rules make that big of a difference. I don't know.
Its up to the club's & the players to decide. So please do not stay silent give us your views you are the ones that make the pool league successful.
Thanks for taking the time to read our blogs and logging on to Newry's best website.
Thanks again from the Newry pool league.
